   Number Six
Downturn and rebound have
Marked the story of our world.
The slow failing of life’s trail before
There was again an upward turn.

The view behind us seems compressed
Squeezed in the hindsight of history.
It seems as if it all happened so quickly
But it really turned over so slowly
It could not be grasped at any one time.

Now we are pushing systems to the brink
Our footprints stamping out the life of others
Moving close to tipping points
With no options for retreat:
We act as if there is no tomorrow
But will be left to grapple with it.

Note. There have been five mass extinctions in the history of our planet. The rapid loss biodiversity now suggests that our present age represents a sixth period of extinction.
