Beside the woods, along the banks We dwelled and reared our kin. We chopped the trees, we caught the fish When our world was young. We cleared the woods, we spread around And tamed the countryside. No lack of space for us to take When our world was young. And when the soil was spent We simply moved along. We found new ground, began afresh When our world was young. Without a thought we took in all That nature had to give. Why bother look beyond our time When things were going well? But room got tight, the space confined We had to do with less. Producing food, the search for fuel Got harder by the year. And now our world is old We’ve used up all we have. The wells are gone, the wood is burned The waters lost their fish. The air is dry, the sun is hot We’re hoping soon for rain. We can’t go back and so we miss Those golden years we thought would last When our world was young. |
