   Slash and Burn
        I

Working by hand
They cleared the woods
To tend to crops.
Providing for families
They kept the circle of
Their lives in step
With the world.

        II

The stumps of trees are
All that is left of the
Ancient forest before
The excavators come and
Level the land as far
As the eye can see.
Then produce what they’re told
Is required elswhere
Ignoring the cost
In their own world.

        III

Raid and divest,
Plunder and retreat.
Strip the assets,
Reap the gains.
Here is our modern life
With the all prevailing
Push for profit.
