[ After Birch Grove (1919) by Anna Ostroumova ] The trunks stand side by side And sway together in the wind. The leaves are thin and light Hanging on thread-like twigs The supple growth of this year is Wine-coloured before hardening Into silver bark. When autumn comes Life is withdrawn Into the trunks and dry leaves Fall yellow to the ground. In winter each new leaf Is wrapped and curled On stiff branches Waiting to unfold Into the spring air.
