   The Everlasting Bonfire

[ environmental issues apply in the afterlife as well ]
Eternity is a longish time
And poses certain problems
Chief of these is probably
How to handle energy.

The fires of hell for quite some time
They’ve now been keenly burning
And all the gases they give off
Are rising up to heaven.

The sulphur and the carbon
Emitted by the fires
Mix with clouds drifting up
To paradise above.

No doubt advances have been made
- Filters have been added -
And stokers in the fire rooms
Try and economise.

But nonetheless celestial rain
Has turned indeed quite acid
The angels' wings have pockmarks
And a film of grimey soot.

The situation in the clouds
Causes great alarm
For those in charge the time has come
To stop this toxic dose.

A delegation from above
They visit down below:
You must curtail the harmful gases
They're ruining heaven’s habitat.

But gentlemen we have a task
The little devils answer:
To sizzle all these sinners
For ever and a day.

The saints they quickly realise
They have to strike a deal
And offer to supply them with
Cleaner coal to burn.

They're not quite sure it will suffice
To clean the air above
Maybe then the only way
Is close down hell for good.
