   Grumping Along

[ complaints when told we must tighten our belts ]
How quickly we forget
The times that were so good
We hold our heads, stare at the ground
And endlessly complain.

With profits down and taxes up
It’s hard to make ends meet.
How will we now maintain and keep
Our present style of life.

It’s not just change at large
The weasel-minded think
But all those secret fiscal ways
No longer are around.

The blank cheques now have gone
And offshore bank accounts.
Now backhanders and freebies
Can land you in court.

And so it is we often think
The walls are closing in.
We moan and groan how hard life is
And yet we trundle on.
