The straight line that was drawn by us Cuts through the land towards the sea And on the banks are paths without A single twist or turn. Behind the paths one finds the roads Equally straight and true And by these roads are clear to see Buildings square and even. But near this man-made Royal Canal You’ll find another waterway Unused for trade, without a barge: The Tolka takes its course. She takes a way which is her own What’s the rush to reach the sea? Instead meander through the fields And lap against the grassy edge. Now broaden out and grace a park Or welcome others flow with her. And on her banks the people sit Or walk their dog or lie in twos.
